Tea Time: White Tea

White tea, a type of tea that is seen as an national drink in China, is unfortunately relatively unknown in the western world. This is changing rapidly though. White tea is becoming more popular by the day. This exclusive beverage deserves nothing less. Read on to find out why you should join the white tea drinkers!

The British made black tea famous in West Europe, but there is a significant change in popularity under way. The main reason for this shift is that tea is no longer just a beverage you drink with your sandwich. People nowadays are very aware of the effects and benefits of all the types of tea and since green and white tea have got the most to offer, everybody has been drinking it like wine! Green tea is the first chose for most people, because white tea leaves are more expensive due to the limited production.

In the early spring only the youngest and first tea buds are gathered by hand and used in the process. They have a white, silver color, hereof the name white tea. The gathering is greatly influenced by the weather. When it rains or freezes it is not possible to keep on going. This results in a very limited production. All the freshly picked tea buds are afterwards steamed and dried. In contrast to green and black tea, white tea is not rolled. Furthermore this type of tea is the least oxidized, which makes it the least processed, purest and probably the most healthy of all. For the past centuries everything during the production process is handled with great care and attention, this made the white tea's image to be a tea of very high quality. The health benefits are mostly the same as the ones of green tea, so the tea contains vitamin C and a lot of antioxidants. There is said to be one special effect though, namely that white tea would prevent wrinkling! This explains why extract of white tea is used in a lot of cosmetic products.

Well, are you convinced to take part in the white tea drinking community? Be our guest!
